Helping Professionals Dismantling Oppression hosted an event at the Sulzer Regional Library on January 29, 2017 that focused on Illinois's terrible financial situation. "Broke" book author Hilary Denk gave an in-depth review of the need for a progressive income tax for the state. She passed out these helpful materials:

Illinois is far and away in worse shape than any state in the country. On the financial side, Illinois has a state blinding spending at a rate that far outpaces what it's taking. According to the disclosure statement, Illinois' net cumulative deficit "Governmental Activities" rose an additional $1.2 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30, to $47.8 billion. "Government Activities" includes almost all the programs and spending normally run by state government, from prison, and education aid, and highway construction. I hope they are able to solve their problem.
